Gulf Shores Beaches Are Clean - January 14, 2011 - Gulf Shores, Al. - Contractors may be pushing back their estimated end date for Gulf Shores deep cleaning - but city officials say they should still meet a February 15th deadline. 

Sorry for the delay in reporting - We had an oil spill and it took 9 months to get everything back to normal.

2010 Red Snapper Season Announced - February 3, 2010 - Mobile, Al. - The National Marine Fisheries Service announced today that the gulf Red Snapper season would open June 1, 2010.  The bag limit will be 2 fish per person.  The length of the season should be from 51 to 60 days.  The actual Red Snapper season closure will be announced sometime around the first week in May.  There has to be a referendum at the April, Gulf Council Meeting and a 30 day public comment period before the actual date will be set.

"Amazing" Journey:  Artist Tre's Taylor finds his muse after a walk in the woods - January 17, 2010 - Fairhope, Al.--  Tre's Taylor says he wasn't looking for an apiphany when he took a leisurely walk in the wood.  However, that fateful stroll through an apple orchard and up a mountain trail - an effort to jump-start his creative process - would lead him to a remarkable place of myth, mysticism and monks.  Artwork will be displayed through Jan 30 in the Courtyard of the Eastern Shore Art Center, 401 Oak St., Fairhope, Al.

Boeing Airlines Oldest Plane Restored - January 14, 2010 - The worlds oldest commercial airliner in service is the B40 and was built in 1928.  After 18,000 hours and 8 years, she is fully restored and ready for service.  This is a work of art and is a beautiful piece of craftmanship.  Aviation enthusiasts from Baldwin County and around the world should enjoy this remarkable feat.

Gulf Shores Fish Struggle To Adapt - January 11, 2010 - Gulf Shores, Alabama (WALA) - The cold weather is doing a number on the mullet population in our area.  Hundreds of dead fish have washed ashore in Gulf Shores.  At least 300 mullet have been found dead along Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores and other areas.  

New Federal Law Requires Saltwater Anglers To Register - January 11, 2010 - NOAA's division of MRIP "Marine Recreational Information Program now requires all saltwater fishing participants to register annually, before fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and Federal Waters.  There are limitations as to who has to register.  The registry is free this year but it will cost a fee in 2011.  Failure to register and getting caught while fishing will result in a citation and a fine.  If you fish on a charter boat you are exempt.  You may register on the internet or via telephone.  Read about it here.

More than 200 Sea Turtles Rescued from freezing temperatures and cold waters of St. Joe Bay  - January 10, 2010 - Port St. Joe, Fl - More than 200 cold-stunned turtles were rescued Thursday from the frigid waters of St. Joseph Bay, and volun-teers will be back out today and this weekend as the rescue effort continues.  The turtles, which also included several of the critically endangered Kemp’s ridley species, will warm up in Gulf World until their natural waters are more welcoming.

Cold Weather Freezes Fish - January 10, 2010 - Ocean Springs, Ms (WLOX) -   On Saturday morning, WLOX reporter Sylvia Hall was working on a story about the Ocean Springs Harbor when she came across thousands of dead fish. The fish were Mullet.  The fish become trapped in the shallow water then die of hypothermia.

False Killer Whales  Bet you have never heard of them? - January 9, 2010 - HONOLULU, HI - The federal government said Tuesday it's considering placing on the endangered-species list a small population of dolphins that live near Hawaii and look similar to killer whales.  Depending on the outcome, the review could affect the Hawaii-based longline fishing fleet because its boats have accidentally snagged the dolphins -- called false killer whales -- in the past.  Check out these videos and other articles about them.  Hawaii False Killer Whales,   NOAA's False Killer WhalesFalse Killer Whale Video from Costa Rica
 

Rare Baby Albino Dolphin Spotted - January 5, 2010 - Dana Point. Ca. -  A baby albino Risso’s dolphin was spotted off the coast over the weekend, a sight charter boat captains have never seen here before.  The small dolphin was among a group of about 60 other Risso’s dolphins. Calves - normally gray - are rarely seen with the pods, but in this group there were about six cruising along the coast, according to Capt. Dave Anderson of Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari.
 

Sushi Grade Bluefin Tuna Fish Brings $177,000 - January 5, 2010 - TOKYO (AP) -- A giant bluefin tuna fetched 16.3 million yen ($177,000) in an auction Tuesday at the world's largest wholesale fish market in Japan. The 513-pound (233-kilogram) fish was the priciest since 2001 when a 440-pound (200 kilogram) tuna sold for a record 20.2 million yen ($220,000) at Tokyo's Tsukiji market. The gargantuan tuna was bought and shared by the owners of two Japanese sushi restaurants and one Hong Kong-based sushi establishment, said a market representative on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the information.
 

Bears love fish bait and will do anything to eat it - January 5, 2010 - Author unknown - This story comes from a fisherman who chartered an airplane in Alaska for a private fishing trip into the back country.  Apparently the angler left his fish bait in a cooler in the airplane and while he was gone, a bear smelled it.  Well, you can read the rest of it here.
